Island Hopping
- Crossing an ocean by a series of shorter journeys between islands
Summary
Although the USA attacked and took over the key outer islands and leave the Japanese on the smaller inner islands, the Japanese never surrendered. However, the USA continued to attack the Japanese in three battles: Battle of Coral Seas, Battle of Midway and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The war culminated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and other large aerial bombing attacks by the United States Army Air Forces resulting in the surrender of Japan and the end of fighting during World War II on 15 August 1945.
