When the Allies landed in Sicily, Salerno and eventually Rome, the Italians deposed Mussolini during the invasions and removed the fascist government. Hitler moved the Germans into Italy in order to save Mussolini and bring him back to Germany; however once Mussolini returned to Italy he was hung and killed with his mistress by Italians in Milan in April 1945.
